Cocktail Smoking: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, we currently have two Cocktail Smokers, one with butane and one without. Both listings include a Smoke Lid, torch, wood chips, and extra screens. Then one includes the butane and one does not. Beware, most cocktail smokers do not include butane and some don't include the torch either. However, the Aged & Charred Smoke Lid with Butane is a drink smoker kit, which includes everything you need to smoke a cocktail. If you've never filled a torch or lighter with butane, you need to hold the torch upside down when filling it, otherwise, not much butane will make it in the torch. Once the torch is filled it should last a long time.

Smoke pairs great with whiskey, bourbon, and rum based cocktail, because these liquors are aged in charred barrels. The best part of smoking a cocktail is experimenting with different recipes. Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, and other whiskey and bourbon based cocktails are excellent with smoke. Try it on smoked rum drinks, smoked margaritas, smoked wine, smoked beer, and more can be great as well! Checkout our drink smoker collection.

Maybe 20 seconds. Literally, once the torch is filled with butane the Aged & Charred Smoke Lid infuses a drink with smoke in seconds. Let the smoke sit a few more seconds and it is ready to be served. Allowing the smoke to rest on the cocktail for too long (ex; > 20s) can over-smoke the cocktail.

A butane torch is necessary. Lighters won't push the smoke down in the glass like a torch will. The Smoke Lid kit includes butane.

Culinary torches can be a little finicky at times. Here are some troubleshooting tips:

  1. Make sure you are holding the torch upside down when you add butane
  2. Place the butane nozzle in the hole located at the bottom of the torch and pump the butane 3 - 4 times, holding each pump for 1 - 2 seconds.
  3. Light the torch while it is upright then tilt the torch head down to burn the chips
  4. There is a dial on the bottom of the torch which may need to be turned + or - to adjust the flow of butane
  5. If the torch won't light, try turning the butane flow +
  6. If the torch stays lit for too long turn the butane flow -

Some spices and herbs will work, just be careful which ones you use as some are probably quite potent. Also, be careful not to use anything which might clog the screen, such as dried fruit.

This cocktail smoker includes enough oak chips for about 100 smoked cocktails. It only takes a pinch of chips per cocktail. So, one container of wood chips goes a long way. Additional wood chip flavor options are available.

Yes, it does. All of our cocktail smoker products come packaged in nice packaging which makes for a great gift presentation.

The price varies depending on the type of smoker and what is included. Most cocktail smokers require a heat source (torch or electric), wood chips, fuel (butane), and a lid to contain the smoke. The last thing anyone wants is to receive a kit and then realize they need to buy more before they can start smoking drinks. Our cocktail smokerscome complete with everything you need. Just be sure to get the 'with butane' version if you don't already have a can of butane.

Smoke pairs great with whiskey, bourbon, and rum based cocktails since they already contain some smoke flavor from their aging process. Check out our smoked cocktail recipes for more ideas and inspiration.

Yes. Whiskey gets much of its flavor from the wood barrels it is aged in. The aging process takes a long time when you have such a large amount of whiskey in a 53 gallon whiskey barrel. However, when you use wood chips on a single bottle of whiskey, you'll notice the flavor in as little as 24 hours. The Fruit Pack, Variety Pack, and Bold Pack of wood chips from Aged & Charred all work great for rapidly aging and flavoring whiskey.
