Smoked Caribbean Rum Zing

Quick Answer
The Smoked Rum Zing is a smoked Caribbean-style cocktail built on dark rum, orange juice, orange liqueur, ginger ale, and grenadine, finished with a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg and a short kiss of wood smoke. Dark rum is a natural partner for smoke because it is aged in charred oak barrels, the same way whiskey gets its color and depth. To make it, build the drink over ice, add the spices on top, then trap wood smoke over the glass with a smoke lid for about 10 to 15 seconds before garnishing with mint. It is bright, sweet, and aromatic — an easy crowd-pleaser that proves smoke is not just for whiskey.
Smoked Rum Cocktail
Whiskey isn't the only liquor which pairs well with smoke. Rum, especially dark rum, is also a great dance partner for some extra smokey flavor. Dark rum gets it's color from the charred oak barrels it is aged in. The same way whiskey gets its darker color from charred barrels.
Instead of being bottled right after the distilling process like clear or white rum, dark, sometimes called 'black' rum, is aged in charred barrels. The barrels are charred with flames and smoke, hence the natural bond between dark rum and smokey flavors.
After experimenting with several Caribbean-style rum drinks, we ultimately ranked the Rum Zing highest of the lot we tested. The flavor infusion of rum, orange, ginger, and cherry is brought to life with the toasted smokey flavor added by the Drink Smoker Kit from Aged & Charred. Top these liquid ingredients off with a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg and let this drink take you on a mental vacation.

Ingredients
- 1.5 oz dark / black rum
- 1.5 oz orange juice
- .5 oz orange liqueur
- 2oz ginger ale
- .5oz of grenadine
- Dash of cinnamon
- Dash of nutmeg
- Wood chips for cocktail smoker

Instructions
- Fill a 16oz glass half full with ice. (A mason jar works great for this smoked cocktail recipe.)
- Pour rum, orange juice, orange liqueur, ginger ale, and grenadine over ice into drink and give it a good stir. Grenadine will settle to bottom if not stirred well.
- Add a splash of grenadine, dash of cinnamon, and dash of nutmeg to the top of the drink
- Add a small pinch of peach flavored wood chips from Aged & Charred to the Smoke Lid. Smoke cocktail and keep covered for about 10 - 15 seconds. The longer it is covered the more smoke flavor will be added to the cocktail, but be careful not to over smoke the drink.
- Add mint sprig garnish and serve while smoke is still settled on the drink
Frequently Asked Questions
What rum is best for a Smoked Rum Zing?
Dark or black rum is the best choice. It is aged in charred oak barrels, which gives it its deeper color and a natural affinity for smoke, so it stands up to the toasted flavor rather than being lost under it. A good Caribbean-style dark rum works beautifully here.
What wood chips work best for a smoked rum cocktail?
Fruit woods suit rum’s natural sweetness — this recipe uses peach, and cherry or apple work well too. They add a mild, sweet smoke that complements the orange and grenadine. Bolder woods like hickory can overpower a lighter drink, so save those for spirit-forward whiskey cocktails. You can browse our cocktail smoking wood chips to find your favorite.
How long should you smoke the cocktail?
About 10 to 15 seconds under a smoke lid is plenty. The longer you keep it covered, the smokier it gets — but go easy, as over-smoking is the most common mistake and can bury the fruit and spice. Serve while the smoke is still settled on the glass.
Can you make a Rum Zing without a smoker?
Yes. Without the smoke it is still a bright, refreshing rum drink in the tiki spirit. The wood smoke is what makes it a Rum Zing, adding an aromatic, toasted layer on top — but the base recipe is delicious on its own if you do not have a smoker handy.
Is the Smoked Rum Zing a sweet cocktail?
It leans to the sweeter, brighter side, thanks to the orange juice, orange liqueur, ginger ale, and grenadine. The dark rum, cinnamon, and nutmeg keep it balanced and give it warmth, so it reads as fruity and festive rather than cloying.
